JR East's sightseeing train "Kairi" was debuted in 2019, running between Niigata and Sakata.
The name comes from the beautiful sea (海) and charming countryside villages(里) that are plentiful in the area.
This train focuses on the local gastronomy of Niigata and Shonai, as well as the breath-taking views of the Sea of Japan that passes by.
The KAIRI is a new hybrid diesel configured with 4 cars and Car 4 is the dedicated dining car where passengers can enjoy Niigata and Shonai cuisines with a view of the beautiful Sea of Japan.
On the outbound journey from Niigata to Tsuruoka and Sakata, you may sample traditional Japanese cuisine made with seasonal, local ingredients from 3 restaurants with over 100 years of history.
On the return trip from Sakata/Tsuruoka to Niigata, you may savour Italian cuisine made with locally produced ingredients under the supervision of top chef from local Italian restaurant Al Ché-cciano in Yamagata prefecture, Masayuki Okuda.
This one of a kind journey offers its passengers a chance to fully enjoy the wonderful cuisine and scenery of Shonai-Niigata.
