Part of the Daisetsuzan National Park in Hokkaido prefecture, the Sounkyo area comprises a range of gorges surrounded by 100-meter-high cliffs. The area is particularly beautiful in the fall season, with hiking tours available most of the year.

The ancient beech forests around it appear drenched in yellow paint until the morning sun hits them & creates a rich reddish hue.
