Nakanoshima Island, which occupies the central position at the heart of Osaka, is a mecca for art and design lovers. Here you can find Osaka City’s museum of modern art and design – the Nakanoshima Museum of Art, Osaka, which houses a collection made up of around 6,000 works (as of January 2022, not counting deposited works), consisting of as many as 5,000 donated pieces and purchased items.

More than three decades have passed since the planning office for the museum was set up in 1990. During this time, artworks were gathered and the museum's vision was updated to reflect societal changes occurring around the world. The museum comes to life in the twenty-first century, as it considers its current and future role in Osaka, in Japan, and in the world.

The museum displays representative works of domestic and overseas art from the mid-nineteenth century up until the present, collected with reference to the richness of art generated here in Osaka. The collection spans Western-style painting by Japanese artists, nihonga (Japanese-style painting), European modern art, contemporary art, prints, photographs, sculpture, design, and more. With highlights including notable works by Saeki Yuzo, a nude by Modigliani, works by the Gutai group’s leading figure, Yoshihara Jiro, and overseas masterpieces, the collection is highly esteemed at the international level. Works from the collection have been exhibited over 60 times, mostly as part of exhibitions showcasing the museum’s collection, both in and beyond Osaka.
