Bonsai Abe in Fukushima City
HOME > Japan’s Local Treasures > Bonsai Abe in Fukushima City
Fukushima City Tourism and Convention Association
Bonsai Abe is a three-generation family-run bonsai nursery established over 90 years ago. Maintaining that beauty resides in nature itself, it seeks to express the beauty of the space shaped by bonsai tree trunks and branches, emulating the weather-beaten forms of wild Azuma Goyomatsu (one of Japan’s top three white pine species) native to the soaring Azuma Mountains west of Fukushima City.
Founder Kurakichi Abe shares his approach and styling know-how in How to Make Pine Bonsai. Translated into English and four other languages, the handbook has connected the nursery with enthusiasts worldwide. Third-generation owner Daiki carries on the global communication of the art of bonsai by organizing practical workshops for overseas and Japanese bonsai fans; technical demonstrations by bonsai professionals; bonsai displays; and residential workshops incorporating tours to natural Azuma Goyomatsu habitats.
Undeterred by COVID, Bonsai Abe now also uses social media, online classes, and other new outlets to actively connect with bonsai fans and communicate authentic bonsai traditions. Exploring and experiencing the Japanese art of bonsai at Bonsai Abe provide excellent opportunities for interacting with and appreciating nature through bonsai.
