Enjoy the outdoors on Sado Island
HOME > Japan’s Local Treasures > Enjoy the outdoors on Sado Island
Niigata Prefectural Tourism Association
Surrounded by the Sea of Japan, Sado Island in Niigata Prefecture is a treasure trove of outdoor activities. The island is not inhabited by large wild animals, including monkeys, bears, and deer, making its flora unique to have about 1,700 kinds of native plants. The beautiful seawater with excellent clarity is another gem to explore.
Sado's rich nature makes the island a dream destination for outdoor enthusiasts. You can enjoy a variety of marine activites in its crystal clear waters, including diving, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding. You can also enjoy hiking, trekking, camping, and cycling in the hilly inland area.
Sado Outdoor Base, located near the gateway ferry terminal of the Ryotsu Port, is where you can get the information and specialized goods you need for outdoor recreation. The place can be the primary stop for anyone who plans to enjoy Sado's nature; you can find professional guides and tours for various activities. Many kinds of gear are available for rent, making it easier for visitors to travel around without carrying heavy luggage. If you want to buy new items, there are outdoor shops too, and you can even use luggage delivery services to send your bags to your accommodation. The building also has changing rooms, shower rooms, and a cafe to sample some of Sado's local specialties.
From Joetsu Shinkansen Niigata Station, take a bus for 15 minutes to Niigata Port. From there, take a 1-hour jetfoil ride to Ryotsu Port, and walk for 4 minutes.
