Explore the Omicho Market to seek out the seasonal ingredients and the incredible food culture of Kanazawa, the capital of Ishikawa Prefecture.
The Omicho Market has been known as the kitchen of Kanazawa citizens for more than 300 years. It continues to play an important role in Kanazawa's gastronomy and is an indispensable part of the city's history. Fresh ingredients are available in Kanazawa, thanks to the city being surrounded by both the mountains and the sea. This has contributed to the market becoming a hub for high-quality and sophisticated cuisine since the feudal era. This culinary culture has made Kanazawa a famous gourmet city. The market is lined with approximately 170 stores, including fish stores selling a wide variety of fresh seafood from the nearby sea, fruit and vegetable stores selling locally grown vegetables, and stores selling dry foods essential to Japanese cuisine.
You can participate in a program where you can purchase ingredients and cook local cuisines using seasonal ingredients guided by a culinary expert while interacting with local merchants. The class is held at a unique, renovated 100-year-old Kanazawa machiya venue (traditional merchant house). Trying your hand at cooking the regional dishes while mingling with the locals is a great way to make unforgettable memories during your stay there.
About 5 minutes by bus from Kanazawa Station.
