Enjoy beautiful views and delicious wine born from Hokkaido’s unique terroir

IWAMIZAWA TOURISM ASSOCIATION

Located in the heart of Hokkaido, the Sorachi District is attracting attention as a new wine-producing region. In terms of latitude, wine can be made even in northern countries. However, making wine in a heavy snowfall area where snow piles up to two meters is almost unparalleled. Hosui Winery in Iwamizawa City, near Sapporo, produces high quality wines that take advantage of the climate unique to this land.

Grapes at Hosui Winery are grown with passion and dedication in the short period from late spring to early winter. After having endured Hokkaido's harsh natural conditions, they are picked and carefully brewed during the cold season to create the year's wine. Making wine in a snowy region takes a lot of time and effort, but the result is a wine full of terroir and flavor, The long and complex aging process gives it not only coolness, but also warmth on the palate.

The winery is closed in the winter months, but it welcomes visitors from spring to autumn, during the grapes’ growing season. Take a tour of the winery, eat soft serve ice cream topped with homemade grape sauce while looking at the vast vineyards, and buy wines and other souvenirs at the gift shop. Even children and those who don’t drink alcohol will enjoy a visit here!

How to get there
