A Nostalgic Trip to Oda City

HOME > Japan’s Local Treasures > A Nostalgic Trip to Oda City

A city of great history and natural beauty, home to the World Heritage Site Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine

Oda City

Situated almost in the center of Shimane Prefecture, facing the Sea of Japan, Oda City is a place full of history and nature. Here you can visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine, once one of the world’s leading silver mines, and Mt. Sanbe, which is part of Daisen-Oki National Park and offers breathtaking views in every direction.

Once a busy port that served the silver mine, the Yunotsu area is part of the World Heritage Site. Spend a night in this historic hot spring town to enjoy its traditional townscape and the public bathhouses of Yakushiyu and Motoyu. At the Kobayashi Kobo workshop, you can experience painting the masks used to perform Iwami Kagura, a popular traditional performing art with Japanese mythology as a motif.

The Iwami Ginzan area retains vestiges of its former days as a mining town. Spend time strolling around the historical townscape, which is lined with old samurai residences, stores, and shrines, and visit shops and restaurants refurbished from old wooden buildings. At Takyo-Abeke, you have the opportunity to stay and experience the traditional Japanese lifestyle in a 18th-century building. A meal with the innkeepers will surely remain as a good memory.
