Sake Brewery Auberge Onyado Fukuchiyo

Dine and stay at Japan’s one and only Frenchstyle auberge run by a sake brewery

Saga Prefecture

Once a prosperous post town along the Nagasaki Kaido Road, Hizen Hamashuku in Kashima City, Saga Prefecture, has been an area of thriving brewing industry since the Edo period (1603-1868). Its picturesque townscape of white-walled sake breweries and thatched-roof houses still retains the atmosphere of the old days and was selected as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings.

A quiet inn in the historical district of Hizen Hamashuku, Onyado Fukuchiyo is Japan’s first Sake Brewery Auberge. In French, auberge means "a restaurant where you can stay." Run by Fukuchiyo Sake Brewery, producer of the acclaimed Nabeshima sake, Onyado Fukuchiyo was renovated from a 230-year-old large merchant house and incorporates contemporary comfort while taking advantage of the traditional Japanese architecture.

At the back of the inn is the restaurant Souan Nabeshima, where you can enjoy the fusion of sake and Japanese cuisine while facing the chef at a solid bubinga wood counter. Creative dishes using seafood and local ingredients from Saga and other regions of Kyushu are served along with the variety of Nabeshima sake, among more than 20 types, that best matches each course. The charm of staying in an auberge is that you can head straight to your room after dinner and relax for the rest of the night.

Onyado Fukuchiyo is exclusively limited to one group per day, providing a unique, memorable experience you are unlikely to find anywhere else. Guests staying at the auberge will also have the opportunity to take a tour of Fukuchiyo Sake Brewery, which is usually closed to the public, learn about the sake-making process, and enjoy tastings.

How to get there

From Saga Airport, take a limousine taxi (reservation needed) to Hizen-Hama Station (about 50 minutes), then walk about 6 minutes to Onyado Fukuchiyo.
