An authentic Buddhist temple, whose founding dates back over 350 years, Temple Hotel Kannon-in was overhauled in 2019 as a “shukubo,” a traditional type of lodging offered by temples in the past. The fresh twist on shukubo comes complete with activities to deepen visitors’ understanding of Buddhism. These include the chanting of sutras in the early morning, calligraphy classes with an expert teacher, and serene meditation in beautiful surroundings. A monthly festival and the sale of charms add to the Buddhist experience with modern luxury trappings.

How to get there

From Tokyo Station, take the Joetsu/Hokuriku Shinkansen to Takasaki Station (about 50 minutes), then a local train to Kiryu Station (about 45 minutes). If coming from Maebashi Station, take a train to to Kiryu Station (about 30 minutes). Temple Hotel Kannon-in is about 15 minutes on foot from Kiryu Station.
