All Bagels Are Made In-House
Takasaki City in Gunma Prefecture may be famous for its steam locomotive train and Daruma dolls, but venture east of the main Takasaki station and you'll chance upon a store in the prefecture well known for its delicious Japanese bagels!
Travel 10 minutes by bus eastwards of Takasaki station and you’ll arrive at Fuku Bakery’s main store. The store’s logo is characterised by the Japanese kanji 福, read as ‘fuku’ and means good fortune in Japanese, hence the store’s name.
Fuku Bakery uses high-quality ingredients ranging from Hokkaido wheat flour and green tea powder from Kyoto, to organic chocolate and garlic from Aomori Prefecture. They make their bagels in their staple flavours, including one made with rice flour that gives the bagel a chewy texture, as well as in unique flavours such as tomato basil with cheese and a walnut maple with cream cheese. One of their best sellers is the Pumpkin Overload, whose dough is incorporated with notes of pumpkin and has a tasty pumpkin paste inside.
The main Takasaki outlet sells more than 20 different bagel varieties, and a total of 50 different offerings, including seasonal specials and sandwiches!
Fuku Bakery is also a proud supporter of women and employs housewives, female part-time workers, and students. The bakery also stands by the motto of not leaving a single bagel unsold and is invested in researching refrigeration methods to store and sell Japanese bagels with minimal wastage.
If you are looking to have a taste of Gunma Prefecture on your next trip to Japan, include Fuku Bakery as part of your itinerary!
