Take in the bounty of Matsushima Bay
Overlooking the picturesque Matsushima Bay, which is dotted with 260 islands, Matsushima Rikyu is a filled with restaurants and shops built around a ten-sided pagoda, The Letzel Tower. The Letzel Tower was constructed based on Matsushima Park Hotel, which was originally built in 1913. The ten-sided pagoda offers a 360º view of the Matsushima bay and the stunning Japanese garden with its maple trees and cherry blossom trees that bloom in season. The garden is spectacular for its autumn foliage during night time illumination.
Enjoy an unparalleled view of the bay from the rooftop terrace, or savour a delicious seafood meal – including local oysters – while gazing out over Matsushima Bay at any of the restaurants. Take home a memento from the souvenir shops that offers a variety of quality local Tohoku crafts. You can also try your hand at crafts like sea glass art and kokeshi doll painting, which is a popular souvenir of the area.
Also serving as a local information centre, Matsushima Rikyu is a great starting point for excursions by land and sea around the Matsushima Bay area.
