Global adventure tourism is growing at an impressive rate as more travelers search for unique and unexplored destinations to exercise their need for adventure and thrilling experiences. Fortunately, Japan's diverse and rugged terrain offers thrill seekers an abundance of incredible activities that are sure to get the blood pumping and the adrenaline running. Here are just a few destinations that every adventure traveler should check off their list.

<h7>Okinawa</h7>

Okinawa, Japan's southernmost island chain, is an incredible collection of islands that offers no end of amazing adventures. Horseback riding along Ishigaki Island's white sandy beaches can make for the perfect day, or you can pay a visit to the very rare Yonaguni horse which can only be found on Yonaguni Island. Although too small for adults to ride, children are welcome to saddle up. While you're on Yonaguni, why not take a dive to the mysterious underwater ruins off the islands coast where one can even have a close encounter with hammerhead sharks. Although the subject of whether the so-called ruins formed naturally or are the sunken remains of an ancient civilization is still debated, one thing is for sure: only experienced divers need apply to visit these submerged structures.

<h7>Nagano</h7>

This former Winter Olympics host has plenty to offer thrill seekers and outdoor adventurers alike. The Japan Alps that run through northern Nagano make it prime skiing real estate with plenty of backcountry for those seasoned skiers looking for an added adrenaline rush – you may even glimpse a snow monkey in its natural habitat. Summer travelers can beat the heat with a thrilling slide down rugged waterfalls or cliff diving into crystalline pools in the beautiful forests of the Northern Alps.

<h7>Tokushima</h7>

The steep mountains and valleys of Tokushima prefecture conceal incredible natural beauty and it has often been referred to as the "Grand Canyon of Japan." The Yoshino River that carves its way through much of the prefecture offers scenic views as well as exciting white water rafting experiences. If you work your way out to Tokushima's coast, you can try your hand at riding a different set of waves. Kaifu point, where the Kaifu River meets the ocean, has hosted national and international surfing competitions and has become well known for its great barrels and large Pacific Ocean swells.

<h7>Mt. Fuji</h7>

No talk of adventure travel in Japan could be without mentioning climbing the iconic Mt. Fuji. Thousands of travelers visit Japan every year to summit the landmark most synonymous with Japan. Before taking on this monumental monument, it's important to read up and thoroughly prepare. The official climbing season is from early July to early September depending on the weather and once the season ends, all trails to the summit close and crossing them is prohibited for safety reasons. Although Mt. Fuji may not be the tallest mountain one could summit, it is still an active volcano and climbers are instructed to prepare themselves nonetheless for the highly unlikely event of an eruption.
