A Factory Tour of a World-Renowned Japanese Whisky Maker

Go behind the scenes at Suntory's storied Hakushu Distillery and sample the sublime product

Nestled in a forest at the foot of the Japan Alps lies the Suntory Hakushu Distillery. Established in 1973, the Hakushu facility is Suntory’s second whiskey distillery. Searching for the perfect location to set up the distillery, the forest of Hakushu was chosen for the quality and mineral content of its water, leading to a fresh, vibrant and crisp whisky as compared to their Yamazaki brand, which offers a deeper, multi-layered taste.

See all the distillery has to offer by joining a full distillery tour (paid and requires booking in advance), or enjoy the bar and museum at your own leisure. The distillery tour consists of a guided tour of the manufacturing process, an explanation regarding Suntory’s dedication to whisky-making, and—at the end of the tour—a tasting session where you can sample the Single Malt Whisky Hakushu as well as its component whiskies. Even if you’re unable to book a tour, you are free to enjoy the storied history and culture behind this tasteful beverage at the on-site Suntory Whisky Museum and Bar Hakushu.

The grounds of the distillery also include the White Terrace restaurant, serving cuisine that has been carefully selected to pair well with whisky. For nature lovers, there's even a bird sanctuary where many wild birds come to visit throughout the year.

Just 2 hours west of Tokyo by train, the Suntory Hakushu Distillery is the perfect place to enjoy whisky surrounded by nature.
