Mt. Gassan (Dewa Sanzan)
Mt. Gassan—together with Mt. Yudono and Mt. Haguro—is one of Yamagata Prefecture's big three sacred peaks which have been the object of traditional mountain worship for centuries. Gassan Shrine stands atop its 1,984-meter-tall summit, waiting to welcome visitors who make the climb. There are several hiking routes from which to choose, along which you can admire alpine plants and views of the surrounding plateau. Beginners should consider the Ubasawa route, one the mountain's south side. The trailhead has parking, toilets, a restaurant, and lodgings. Mt. Gassan also sees heavy snow, and offers the opportunity to ski even in summer.

Access
From JR Yamagata Station, take an express bus for about 40 minutes to the Nishikawa bus stop. From there, take a local bus another 45 minutes to Ubasawa. Alternatively, take a local bus from JR Tsuruoka Station to Gassan Hachigome. The trip takes about two hours.
