Paddle down the tranquil waters of Kushiro River
Kushiro River is surrounded by lush nature. Paddle down its tranquil waters, starting from Choko Bridge near Lake Kussharo. Look out for wild birds and animals as you make your way past marshes and the forested riverbanks. The course is complete when you reach Biruwa Bridge. Experienced local guides run canoe tours, so beginners can participate, too.
Red-crowned crane
The Kushiro River's banks play host to a rich variety of wildlife. In winter, look out for whooper swans near the starting point of the course. Look out for Japanese deer and white-tailed eagles while canoeing down the river.
The transparent waters of Kagami-no-Ma
Kagami-no-Ma, literally "mirror space," is a quiet spot known for its crystal-clear waters. It is so transparent you can see spring water welling up from the bottom of the river. The area is home to aquatic plants such as watercress and the delicate baikam (Ranunculus nipponicus var. submersus).
The rapids of Biruwa
The only challenging section of the course is located just before Biruwa Bridge. At the Biruwa Shallows, the tranquil water turns into rippling waves. Exercise caution while paddling through these two-step rapids.
