Dig your own hot spring in the sand on the shores of Lake Kussharo
Sunayu Rest House is located on the shores of Lake Kussharo, next to a stretch of sandy shore called Sunayu, literally, "sand bath." Try digging a hole in the sand and watch hot spring water well up from below. The water comes from hot springs under the lakeshore. Sunayu is a popular spot on Lake Kussharo for swimming, relaxing with your feet in the warm sand, boating, and watching wildlife.
You can rent paddle boats or book a motorboat cruise from the Sunayu Rest House, and there is a souvenir shop and restaurant. In summer, the campground next to the rest house is a convenient and affordable place to stay. In winter, Sunayu attracts wildlife photographers, as whooper swans migrate to the area from Siberia.
