An easy hike along a ridge that overlooks wide, grassy plains
This hike begins in front of Kuju Shinrin Koen Ski Resort at the Mount Hitome trailhead. Take the path that goes through these grasslands and you'll reach Mount Hitome's peak in about 20 minutes.
After taking in the views from Mount Hitome, head toward Mount Misokobushi via a ridge where Japanese pampas and other grasses grow. From the top of Mount Misokobushi (1,299 m), you'll have a splendid view of the Kuju mountain range, as well as views of Aso and Mount Waita (1,500 m).
After walking through grasslands populated with evergreen bamboo, you'll come to a junction leading to Mount Waita and the hot springs of Hizenyu Onsen. At the junction, walk around the stone tower and head down the steep slope to reach Hizenyu Onsen and the Sujiyu Onsen hot spring baths—perfect for a relaxing dip after your hike. After leaving the baths, walk down the Sujiyu Onsen road and back to the Mount Hitome trailhead.
