Learn all about Hakone’s tumultuous volcanic past and how volcanoes behave

Head to Hakone GeoMuseum at Owakudani to discover the joys and hazards of living near an active volcano, as well as what makes volcanoes erupt and hot springs bubble. Experts are on hand to help you handle microscopes and mineral samples. Try interactive experiments designed to help you grasp Hakone's fascinating geological story. Immersive exhibits bring that history to life using dramatic lighting and large multimedia displays.

Before you leave, be sure to sample at least one black egg–a local delicacy hard-boiled in the nearby volcanic water. The eggs have an attractive charcoal color, and each one you eat supposedly adds seven years to your life.
