Hakone Komagatake Ropeway

A bird’s-eye view of Lake Ashinoko and Mount Fuji

The Hakone Komagatake Ropeway’s large, comfortable gondolas provide spectacular views of Hakone’s celebrated scenery. Starting from Hakone-en on the shore of Lake Ashinoko, the ropeway covers a distance of 1,783 meters in 7 minutes. The ropeway's top station has a spacious plaza with an observatory, from which you can see Mount Fuji (3,776 m) and all the way to Suruga Bay and Shonan Beach. On the clearest days, you might glimpse distant Boso Peninsula, nearly 100 kilometers away on the far side of Tokyo Bay.

It is a short walk to the summit of Mount Komagatake (1,356 m) atop which Hakone Mototsumiya-jinja Shrine stands. The shrine is part of Hakone-jinja Shrine, whose main site is accessible from the shores of Lake Ashinoko in Moto-Hakone.

Mount Komagatake has many seasonal attractions. Spring brings the forested areas to life with blooms of miniature cherry trees, while in summer, swathes of meadowsweet and bellflowers bloom. Vivid shades of red, orange and yellow warm up the landscape as the leaves turn in fall. In winter, look out for rolling seas of cloud and trees covered with silver frost.
