Anori-Daio-Tomoyama Scenic Drive

Take in peaceful and dramatic sections of the coastline, as well as two lighthouses

This short driving course explores the coastline of Shima, passing several sightseeing spots where you can park for free to explore on foot. The exception is Daiosaki Lighthouse, where parking is around 500 yen.

The starting point, Anorisaki Lighthouse, stands at the end of a long, thin peninsula on the southern edge of peaceful Matoya Bay. The road then meanders gently down the coast past beaches and fishing towns to Daiosaki Lighthouse, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Near the lighthouse is an atmospheric warren of small shopping streets and moorings where you can see fresh fish being unloaded from the boats.

The road cuts inland from Daiosaki toward Ago Bay, where you can take sightseeing boat trips or try water sports. From Kirigaki Viewpoint, you'll have an expansive view of Ago Bay where Akoya oyster rafts bob on the water. The local area's famous pearls grow in Ago Bay.
