Kashikojima-Kou-Shirahama Beach Cycling

A fun cycling course that takes in both the human and natural landscapes of the Shima area

This cycling route takes in rural and coastal scenes, demonstrating the ideals of satoyama and satoumi—ways of managing lands and seas that maintain a balance between the humans and nature. It features a few hills, allowing you good vantage points of peaceful Izonoura Bay and the deep inlets of Matoya Bay.

The route begins on Kashikojima, then crosses onto the mainland and heads north toward Izonoura Bay along Prefectural Road 17 and National Road 167. This section of the route often has heavy traffic, so if you want to avoid this, it's better to start at either Shima-Isobe Station or Anagawa Station instead.

At Anagawa Station, the road veers right to trace the edge of the bay before cutting across to the wide, sandy expanse of Kou-Shirahama Beach; this section of the route is a dedicated cycle path. After following the coast down to the pine-backed stretch of beach at Ago-no-Matsubara, the route rejoins the road to head back toward Kashikojima.
