The Observatories of Zamamijima Island

A drive featuring rugged scenery, sheer cliffs and scenic ocean views

Zamamijima has several observatories, and this driving course takes in three along the island's coast. Chishi Observatory, the northernmost observatory on Zamamijima Island, is famous for its panoramic views of the ocean. Unajinosachi Observatory is perched on the island's western cliffs and is a popular spot to watch the sunset. Between them is Inazaki Observatory, a favorite in winter, when you have the opportunity to see humpback whales swimming and breaching in the waters below.

Chishi Observatory

Chishi Observatory is located atop the northern cliffs of Zamamijima Island and offers excellent views of nearby Agunijima Island and the surrounding coastline. Strong northerly winds have shaped the growth of the area’s vegetation. You'll notice that plants around the observatory grow low to the ground, and some have taken unusual shapes.

Inazaki Observatory

Whale watching from Inazaki Observatory

Inazaki Observatory stands atop steep cliffs on the northern end of Zamamijima Island. From here, you can look out over the ocean at the islands of Tonakijima, Kumejima and Agunijima. It's one of the best places to watch the annual humpback whale migration through the area between late December and April—so don't forget your binoculars.

Watch the sun set over the western sea

Unajinosachi Observatory is located on the western coast of Zamamijima Island, on the tip of Cape Unajinosachi. The observatory's deck offers views of the coastline and the islands of Kumejima and Agunijima on clear days. It's a popular spot to watch the sun disappear beyond the horizon, so it's no surprise it is nicknamed the Sunset Observatory.
