Walk around historical and secluded Unagi Onsen and experience “sume cooking”
Unagi Onsen is a secluded hot spring resort located within Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park, known for its mysterious crater lake, Unagi-ike. This guided tour begins with a leisurely walk through the charming historic streets of the town.
Next, participate in a cooking experience with a type of oven called a sume that uses hot spring steam to prepare foods suich as eggs, sweet potatoes, and seasonal vegetables. You'll get to enjoy these along with chabushi, a delicacy made with barley miso paste and dried bonito flakes.
After the meal, learn about Saigo Takamori—a native of Kagoshima and one of the key players in the modernization of Japan—and go on a scavenger hunt for 13 statuettes of his beloved dog in order to receive a badge. These relaxing activities highlight the unique history of Unagi Onsen.
