Ancient shrine ruins in the midst of nature
The Kirishima-jingu Shrine Furumiya Ato ruins are what remains of the first Kirishima-jingu Shrine, where devotees worshiped Ninigi no Mikoto, the grandson of the Sun Goddess. The shrine was destroyed by an eruption of Mount Kirishima in 1232.
The site is often shrouded in mist, bestowing it with a mysterious atmosphere. However, on a clear day, you can see views of the nearby Ohachi Crater and Mount Nakadake. Listen for the calls of local deer and wild birds that live in the surrounding forests.
On the tenth day of every month, a special festival called Tsukinami Matsuri is held at Kirishima-jingu Shrine Furumiya Ato to commemorate Ninigi no Mikoto's descent from heaven, with the largest of these monthly festivals being held on November 10. In mid-May, stop by to enjoy the colorful blossoms of the Miyama Kirishima azalea that grow around the vicinity.
