A shrine that embodies Japan's sacred origins
Kirishima-jingu Shrine is located at the foot of Mount Takachiho-no-Mine, an important location in Japanese mythology. According to legend, the Sun Goddess’s grandson, Ninigi no Mikoto, descended from the heavens to the Takachiho-no-Mine summit, where he thrust his sword into the ground. Ninigi no Mikoto is said to the great-grandfather of the first Japanese emperor, Emperor Jimmu, linking the imperial family to divine ancestry. Ninigi no Mikoto is enshrined at Kirishima-jingu.
Over 100 rituals are carried out at Kirishima-jingu Shrine annually. Drum festivals often take place, the biggest of which is held on New Year's Day. Many other types of festivals are held at the shrine, so be sure to check at local tourist information offices and let them help you time your visit to see something truly special.
