Kirishima Mythology Scenic Drive

Visit sites of historical and religious importance in an area with many onsen

This course takes you on the road around one of Japan's largest hot spring areas. The route roughly follows the foothills on the south side of Mount Kirishima. You'll have a chance to visit several onsen, Yunotaki Falls and Kirishima-jingu Shrine. This tour also visits the ruins of the former Kirishima-jingu Shrine. The ruins are close to the setting of one of Japan's most important origin myths.

The tour starts at Kirishima Spa Village, situated on the southwest side of the mountain. This village is home to many onsen, ranging from the many hot spring inns of the Maruo Onsen area to smaller family-run bathhouses tucked away in the mountains. The spring water comes mostly from a sulfurous hot spring, but many different types of bathing experiences are available. While some baths have milky-white waters that smell strongly of sulfur, others have clear waters with a milder fragrance.

After visiting Kirishima-jingu Shrine Furumiya Ato, ruins of the former Kirishima-jingu Shrine, head to Takachiho Farm and enjoy a view of the Kirishima mountain range. Before heading to Shinwa-no-Sato Park, visit the current site of the Kirishima-jingu Shrine. The shrine's deep red beams contrast sharply with the surrounding greenery.

Highlights

Kirishima-jingu Shrine

A visually impressive shrine and an Important Cultural Property of Japan

Kirishima-jingu Shrine symbolizes the Kirishima area's deep connection to the Shinto faith, one of Japan's two main religions. According to Japanese folklore, it is said that the grandson of the Sun Goddess, Ninigi no Mikoto, first descended to Earth at Mount Takachiho-no-Mine, and then thrust his spear into the ground. The former location of Kirishima-jingu was at the foot of Takachiho-no-Mine, but about 800 years ago an eruption caused the shrine to burn down. This prestigious bright red shrine, at its current location, is one of Japan's designated Important Cultural Properties.

Maruo Falls

A rare thermal waterfall

Thanks to its location downstream from the hot springs of Eno-o Onsen and Iodani Onsen, this waterfall is one of the few in Japan that flows with hot water. The water itself has a pale, milky color and a mild scent of sulfur. In winter, you can see steam rising from the falls, creating an otherworldly atmosphere.

Shinwa-no-Sato Park Observatory (Kirishima Mythology Park)

Panoramic views from Shinwa-no-Sato Park

Take the chair lift at Shinwa-no-Sato Park up to the observatory to enjoy uninterrupted views of Kinkowan Bay, Mount Sakurajima and Mount Takachiho-no-Mine. You can enjoy other activities in the park, including two golf courses and a slide that offers you a speedy descent down the slopes. The park is located next to the Kirishima Roadside Station, a good place to eat and relax after your long drive.
