Take in beautiful views of Lake Chuzenji and learn about the international history of Oku-Nikko
Visit carefully preserved former diplomatic residences in Oku-Nikko to learn about the long history of cultural exchange between Japan, the United Kingdom, and Italy. Diplomats once used these residences in Nikko to escape the heat and humidity of summer.
The British Embassy Villa was built by famous British diplomat Ernest Satow in 1896, and the Italian Embassy Villa, designed by Antonin Raymond, was constructed in 1928. The design of the Italian Embassy Villa is particularly unique in that it uses intricate cedar bark panels for both the interior and exterior walls.
Be sure to try tea and scones endorsed by the British embassy chef at the British Cultural Communication Room, or grab something to go from the cafe. Enjoy the tranquil scenery of Lake Chuzenji during your visit.
