Nasu Heisei-no-Mori Forest Trail

Stroll through the pristine Nasu Heisei-no-Mori Forest

This circular trail takes you from the Nasu Heisei-no-Mori Field Center through the Heisei-no-Mori Forest to Komadome Falls and back again. The first section of the trail takes you up a gradual incline to an observation deck overlooking Komadome Falls, giving you a prime view of the falls cascading down a steep cliff. The trail then leads you through the forest back to your starting point. This route always has something new to offer, no matter what the season. The path is accessible in winter using snowshoes.

Highlights

Nasu Heisei-no-Mori Field Center

The gateway to the forest

The lush, 560-hectare Nasu Heisei-no-Mori Forest was managed as part of the Nasu Imperial Villa until 2008, before opening to the public as a nature recreation park. You'll find the Nasu Heisei-no-Mori Field Center at the entrance to the forest trail, where you can get information about the park, learn about its natural habitat, and sign up for guided walks.

The Forest Recreation Zone

Recreation and learning zones

Nasu Heisei-no-Mori Forest consists of two areas: the Forest Recreation Zone and the Forest Learning Zone. The Forest Recreation Zone is free and open to anyone to roam around and explore. This zone features wheelchair-accessible paths, trails to the observation deck at Komadome Falls, and sheltered rest areas. The Forest Learning Zone is only accessible through guided walks with a nature expert as part of the park's conservation efforts.

Komadome Falls

A waterfall of ever-changing beauty

Komadome Falls cascades 20 meters over a steep cliff. The waterfall's name means "waterfall where even the horses stop" in Japanese. In the past, both travelers and their horses would stop to marvel at the waterfall's beauty. The observation deck here allows you to see a full view of the waterfall from above, plunging down the cliffside. The forest is bright emerald green in the early summer but turns myriad shades of red, brown and gold in the fall. A parking lot near Komadome Falls makes it easy to access without walking from the Nasu Heisei-no-Mori Field Center.
