This course features a trail loop that takes you through the pristine nature of Heisei-no-mori Forest’s “Forest Recreation Zone” from the Field Center to Komadome Falls. The Forest Recreation Zone is a nature exploration area where you can stroll freely through the forest. At Nasu’s famous Komadome Falls, the scene created by the dynamic, seasonal landscape of the mountains and the contrast of the waterfall’s stunningly clear, blue water is simply breathtaking. The first part of the course consists of a fairly straight, uphill trail that leads you to an observation deck, where you can view the Komadome Falls. The way back is a gentle, downhill trail which leads you through the middle of the pleasant forest to the goal point. This course is enjoyable any season of the year, and in the winter you can even snowshoe through the trails.
This lush, 560 hectare forest was managed as part of the Nasu Imperial Villa until 2008 before being opened to the public as the Nasu Heisei-no-mori Forest nature recreation park. The Nasu Heisei-no-mori Field Center — located at the entrance to the forest — is where visitors can get information about using the park, learn about the its nature, and sign up for guided walks.
Nasu Heisei-no-mori Forest consists of two areas, the Forest Recreation Zone and the Forest Learning Zone. The Forest Recreation Zone is free for all visitors to stroll through and explore. With the Field Center as its main facility, this zone features wheelchair-accessible paths, trails to the observation deck at Komadome Falls, and arbors for resting. In order to help protect its natural environment, the Forest Learning Zone is accessible only through guided walks with a nature interpreter.
Considered Nasu's foremost waterfall, Komadome Falls is three meters wide and falls approximately twenty meters from a cliff on the Yosasa River. It is said that the waterfall is called “Komadome,” meaning “waterfall where the horses stop,” because in the past it was so stunningly beautiful that not only the travelers, but also their horses, would stop in their tracks to gaze at the waterfall. The observation deck allows you to see a full view of the waterfall from above, which is surrounded by emerald green trees in the early summer and a rainbow of colorful leaves in the fall. With a parking lot nearby, the beauty of the Komadome Falls is accessible to all visitors.
