Riding an e-bike, you’ll be able to take in the satoyama scenery, spot occasional wildlife, and learn about local history and culture with your guide.
Shiobara Onsen, located within Nikko National Park. Its areas of satoyama countryside are not to be missed. This was an important charcoal making area 50 years ago, and even fallen leaves and twigs were valuable resources. As time went by, people left the area. As a result, animals living deep in the deep forest came closer to the villages and caused agricultural damage. However, locals understand that this is not entirely the animals’ fault, and that humans are a part of the problem. With that in mind, we set up satoyama patrols, with the goal of encouraging animals to return to the deep forest.
There's an old road through the village that people used to live along that your guide will bring you down on your e-bike to explore the satoyama area. You can choose tours according to your cycling skills. On the way back is another highlight of the tour: a stop at mineral-rich Shiobara Onsen. * Please wear comfortable clothing and bring something to drink. Children can participate if they are at least 150 cm.
