Rishiri-Rebun-Sarobetsu National Park

Sarobetsu Wetland Center

A base for exploring the wetlands of northern Hokkaido

Visitors to Rishiri-Rebun-Sarobetsu National Park in northern Hokkaido can learn about the rich natural environment of the Sarobetsu Wetland at the Sarobetsu Wetland Center. Explore the center's exhibits on the 100 different kinds of flowers and wild birds that live in the area, watch the live camera feed, or join a guided tour of the wetlands.

A 1-kilometer walkway leads from the center out into the wetland. Wander along the wooden path and spot birds and flowering vegetation along the way. Take a break on the benches along the paths and admire the view—on clear days you will be able to see Mount Rishiri in the distance.

A certified NPO (Nonprofit Organization) works with the Sarobetsu Wetland Center to offer guided nature walks (fee required) that accommodate both small groups and larger bus tours. Programs range from informative guided strolls along the walkway to snowshoe hikes through the wetlands and forests. In winter, visitors can rent snowshoes, long-boots, ski wear, hats, gloves and other gear from the center for a fee.

The family-friendly Sarobetsu Wetland Center has a designated children’s space with crafts and activities. Other facilities include the museum shop and restaurant. The restaurant menu includes local area dishes like the Sarobetsu surf clam ramen and ice cream made with Toyotomi milk, produced in Hokkaido.
