Saikai National Park consists of nearly 400 islands with scenic landscapes, including Kujukushima, Hirado Island, and the Goto Islands. Besides the natural environment with beautiful seas and rugged terrain, the area has long been populated, and was an enclave of Hidden Christian culture. There are numerous churches throughout the islands. Their architecture amid the landscape offers an extraordinary experience blending faith-based culture and natural scenery. Stargazing and a hike on Mount. Onidake, Fukue Island’s iconic landmark
In the morning, you take a high-speed ferry from Nagasaki Port to Fukue Port. After visiting Abunze Visitor Center, you head to Mount Onidake, the iconic landmark of Fukue Island, known for its elegant shape, the result of ancient volcanic eruptions. You then walk a loop trail around Mount Onidake, which is now covered in picturesque grass. From the summit you can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view, taking in island’s townscape and Kamigoto Island in the distance.
After lunch, you spend the afternoon driving around the island, where you visit the coast, Osezaki Lighthouse, and a footbath. Once you have checked in at your hotel on the Abunze Lava Coast, you take a nighttime guided tour to gaze at the gorgeous starry sky. Only a remote island with its minimal interference from city lights can offer such a view. You’ll love the breathtaking beauty of the same night sky that people gazed at in ancient times.
A boat cruise and Hidden Christian churches
In the morning, you travel by boat from Fukue Port to Aokata on Kamigoto Island, enjoying island views along the way. Kamigoto Island is dotted with 29 churches built by Hidden Christians. On this tour you visit Yakezaki Catholic Church. The peaceful sight of the church standing in the village speaks to the history of this "Island of Prayer.” In the afternoon, you take a Wakamatsu Seto cruise along the varied coastline. You spend the night near Hamaguirihama Beach.
A kayak tour of Kamigoto Island
You spend your final day sea kayaking around the islands near Kamigoto. It provides an experience of both the natural landscape and the local culture as you visit quiet, uninhabited islands and the village of Kashiragashima, which is part of a UNESCO World Heritage site. You also visit the Narao Ako Tree (Ficus superba var. japonica); known as a natural torii shine gate, it is over 670 years old. The location is thought to have sacred power. In the evening, you take a high-speed ferry from Narao Port to Nagasaki Port for your trip onward.
