Explore the slopes of Mount Akita-Komagatake and fields of alpine plants
This course loops from Mount Akita-Komagatake's Eighth Station to the summit of Mount Onamedake and back. After descending Mount Onamedake, stop by the summits of Mount Yokodake and Mount Yakemori before returning to the starting point. Look out for blooming fields of daylilies and the small white flowers of Aleutian avens near Amidaike Pond throughout summer.
Views from Mount Katakuradake
Mount Katakuradake, located halfway between the Eighth Station and Amidaike Pond, gives visitors great views of Mount Moriyoshi and Lake Tazawa. On clear days, Mount Chokai can also be seen in the distance.
Amidaike Pond
Mount Onamedake, Mount Odake, and Mount Yokodake loom over pristine Amidaike Pond, encircled by a wooden promenade. There is an emergency hut on the east side of the pond where hikers can take a break. Head to the west side of the pond to observe various alpine flowers like Aleutian avens and daylilies in summer.
Komakusa (Dicentra peregrina)
Mount Onamedake (1,637 m) is the highest peak along the Mount Akita-Komagatake Hiking Trail. From the summit, hikers are rewarded with the panoramas of Mount Hachimantai, Mount Nyuto, and Mount Iwate. After the flower season ends in early September, the foliage in this area starts to change color from mid-September.
