Yakushima (Island) National Park

Clamming and Abalone Gathering in Yakushima

Parks Overview Parks Overview

Gather shellfish at low tide on the shore, or by snorkeling, accompanied by a fisherperson guide

Scour the rocky shore of Yakushima at low tide for shellfish. Seafood, such as small abalone are the main catch, but common ear shells, limpets, and other shellfish are also found. These mollusks can be harvested without taking to the water, but visitors in December–June can put on a wetsuit and snorkel for their catch. A local fisherperson will be your guide, showing you the best spots and proper technique.
