Walk part of the ancient Kumano Kodo pilgrim routes like a twelfth-century pilgrim
In the late Heian period (794–1185), the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage was so popular that long lines of pilgrims were said to resemble marching ants. Pilgrims from the upper classes dressed in elegant robes to make the journey. Visit the Daimonzaka tea house (chaya) near the start of the Daimonzaka stairway, to dress in Heian costume and recreate the experience of an ancient pilgrimage.
