The Tohoku Kizuna Matsuri began in 2017 as the successor to the Tohoku Rokkonsai Festival, an event held to pray for the repose of the souls of those who lost their lives in the Great East Japan Earthquake and for recovery from the disaster.

Held on a rotating basis in the six prefectural capitals of Tohoku since 2017, this exciting event allows visitors to experience the region’s six colorful summer celebrations at one venue: the Aomori Nebuta Festival, Morioka Sansa Odori, Akita Kanto Festival, Sendai Tanabata Festival, Yamagata Hanagasa Festival, and Fukushima Waraji Festival.
Every year, the parade and stage events of the six festivals are held over two days, but the highlight is the Tohoku Kizuna Matsuri Parade, in which teams from all six of the festivals perform.

In 2025, the Tohoku Kizuna Festival will hold performances at the Japan International Exposition in Osaka so that people from around the world can experience the colorful, energetic atmosphere of the northern region’s beloved summer festivals.
