Yamagata Prefecture

Enjoy the refreshing breeze as it flows through your hair during your relaxing train ride on the Flower Nagai Line. The local line covers about 30.5 kilometers within the southern region of Yamagata Prefecture, passing through some of the prefecture's most beautiful scenery.

Opened in 1913, it was the first line connecting Akayu Station and Ringo Station in Nanyo City. The line was then extended to Nagai Station in the following year. With the love and support from the people within the area, 2023 marked 100 years since the line’s extension to Arato Station in Shirataka.

The Flower Nagai Line was named after the variety of beautiful flowers passengers can observe between Akayu Station and Nagai Station. Irises, dahlias, lilies, roses, safflowers, and cherry trees can be seen throughout the trip.

When spring comes to Yamagata, there are many must-see spots, such as a cherry blossom tree that is more than 1000 years old, designated as one of the top 100 cherry blossom spots in Japan, as well as National Treasure sites located around the area. The Flower Nagai Line covers the distance at a relaxed pace, but to truly experience the beauty like a local, you are going to want to ride it more than once!
