Defy your expectations and experience skiing in the sun from April to July

Yamagata Prefectural Government

When the snow begins to melt in April, you may begin to put away your skis and snowboards with a heavy heart, as the next ski season feels like an eternity away. However, in Yamagata Prefecture, you do not need to worry! Located on Mt. Gassan, one of the Three Sacred Mountains of Dewa, Mt. Gassan Ski Resort lets skiers on its slopes far longer than other typical resorts.

It is standard for ski resorts in Japan to open in December and close in February. It might sound crazy, but during that period there is so much snow that Mt. Gassan is actually closed! In fact, Mt. Gassan Ski Resort opens in April. The resort sits 1600 meters above sea level, making it possible to ski all the way up until July. There are several courses available, from beginner to advanced, so you can have fun whatever your level.

In May, you can ski amongst the beech trees, amidst the beautiful contrast of the blue of the sky, the white of the snow, and the green of the fresh leaves. You will also be able to see stunning views of the magnificent Asahi mountain range right in front of you. When visiting Yamagata in the spring to enjoy cherry blossom festivals or cherry picking, you must try skiing at Mt. Gassan!

How to get there

From Yamagata Station on the Yamagata Shinkansen, take a taxi to Mt. Gassan Ski Resort (about 40 minutes).
