Among Japan’s prefectures, Niigata has the largest number of shrines, of which Yahiko Shrine is the oldest. Located near the shrine is Yahiko Park, which is ranked among Niigata’s top three spots for viewing autumn leaves. There, visitors can enjoy a magnificent view of scarlet maple leaves in the Momiji-Dani Valley.
Although changing leaves may be what first comes to mind when one thinks of autumn, chrysanthemum viewing is another activity not to miss during this season. Chrysanthemums are highly regarded among Japanese, accompanying the cherry blossom as one of the country’s most iconic flowers, and serving as the emblem of the imperial family. The Yahiko Chrysanthemum Festival is held at Yahiko Shrine in November, when the leaves begin changing colour every year. Visitors can enjoy tea and steamed buns after they stroll around the shrine grounds.
