Kumamoto Castle Main Keeps

HOME > Japan’s Local Treasures > Kumamoto Castle Main Keeps

The renovation of castle’s keep is finally complete! Experience a space where history and technology merge.

Kumamoto Prefectural Tourism Federation

Kumamoto Castle was severely damaged by the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake. Five years after the disaster, the restoration of the castle main keep has been completed!

The special walkway installed between the entrance and the main keep is the recommended course. Through there, you can discover the castle's hidden beauty from a unique perspective. It has a view from a height of about 6 meters above the ground. This opportunity is only available for a limited time, since it will be removed in 2038 when the renovation is complete.

The interior of the renovated main keep is filled with elaborate exhibitions up to the observation floor overlooking Kumamoto city. It is a space that combines history with technology, such as the latest earthquake-resistant structures, a free audio guide app, projection mapping, etc. Using various means such as colorful illustrations, precise models as well as videos specially created for this renewal, the history of Kumamoto Castle and Kumamoto city are expressed in an accessible manner for everyone to enjoy. The castle premise is barrier-free, equipped with slopes and elevators.

How to get there

From Kumamoto Station, take the city tram to Hanabata-cho Station (about 15 minutes). Kumamoto castle is about 5 minutes from Hanabata-cho Station on foot.
