If you're seeking a light hiking adventure with stunning views of islands and the ocean, along with esteemed Buddhist structures of deep religious and historical significance, look no further than Mt. Misen in Hiroshima prefecture. Mt. Misen, the highest peak on Miyajima Island in Hiroshima Prefecture, is surrounded by iconic sites such as the "floating” torii gate, Itsukushima Shrine, and the many curious deer that roam the island's roads and streets.
Visitors to Mt. Misen can choose from the Momijidani Course, Daisho-in Course, and Omoto Course, all of which lead to the mountain's summit and take approximately 1.5 to 2.5 hours to complete from town. Among the three trails, the two-hour Daisho-in Course that starts by the Daisho-in Temple takes hikers through high forests adorned with picturesque shrines and temples, culminating in a breathtaking 360-degree view of the Seto Inland Sea from the Mt. Misen observatory at the top of the mountain.
After reaching the summit of Mt. Misen, visitors can take a 1-kilometer walk to the Mt. Misen Ropeway stop and enjoy the stunning autumn foliage during their descent. A visit to Miyajima is incomplete without hiking up Mt. Misen and witnessing the breathtaking panoramic view of the Seto Inland Sea from the summit. It is important to note that while the three official trails are well-maintained, the trails on Mt. Misen have steep inclines and rocky terrain. To ensure safety, it is recommended to wear appropriate hiking attire.
From Hiroshima Station, take the JR Sanyo Line to Miyajimaguchi Station, then walk to the ferry pier where you can catch a 10-minute ferry ride to Miyajima. You can also catch a 45-minute long ferry ride from the Hiroshima Peace Park. The Daisho-in Temple is a 30-minute walk from the Miyajima pier.
