One of the most scenic railways in Tohoku, the Tadami Line extends approximately 135km from Aizu-Wakamatsu Station in Fukushima Prefecture to Koide Station in Niigata Prefecture. The line suffered serious damage due to torrential rains in 2011, but was fully reopened in October 2022, 11 years after the disaster, fulfilling the wishes of the local community.
Running across diverse landscapes and stunning views, the Tadami Line is a scenic ride in all seasons. The majestic beauty of the Tadami River valley and the surrounding mountains never ceases to fascinate visitors. The scenery of the train running through the snowy landscape in winter is especially beautiful.

The most popular place on the Tadami Line is the Daiichi Tadami River Bridge, a purple arch bridge spanning over the Tadami River. In winter, its reflection on the surface of the water surrounded by snow covered trees is a truly magnificent sight. Hop off the train and climb to the nearby viewpoint to get the perfect photo shot!

With 36 stations along its route, the Tadami Line has plenty of unique sightseeing spots and attractions. Make a stopover along the way to taste local gourmet foods, such as basashi (raw horse meat) and Yanaizu sauce katsudon (rice bowl topped with deep-fried pork cutlet), or to visit a local sake brewery. There are also several hot springs where it is possible to spend a relaxing time while enjoying the snowy scenery.

How to get there

From Koriyama Station on the Tohoku Shinkansen, take the JR Banetsu West Line to Aizu-Wakamatsu Station (80 minutes by rapid train), then change to the JR Tadami Line.
