Discover the Outdoor Autumn Library in Its Extensive Plaza
Autumn is a delight to behold in Japan, with its vibrant colours inducing a sense of warmth and nostalgia in its earnest viewers. The area of Karuizawa in Nagano Prefecture welcomes the arrival of autumn about a month earlier than Tokyo.

For those looking to catch the first turns of autumn away from Tokyo and in the heart of nature, Hoshino Resorts in Karuizawa is the ideal place to do so — specifically the Karuizawa Hoshino Area, where Hoshino Resorts has set up its Autumn Library. Taking place from 1st October to 6th November this year, Autumn Library is an outdoor library with around 500 books set in a 2,000-square-metre plaza.

The bookshelves of the outdoor library are built by Rebuilding Center Japan in the prefecture's Suwa City, a facility that collects and reuses old materials and old tools. The bookshelves blend in with the landscape of the plaza grounds and double up as benches for visitors. Additionally, with autumn being the season of arts and appetites, books related to autumn will be on display and are free to pick up and read.

If you're interested in having autumn flavours accompany your reading time, the nearby Cafe Hungry Spot offers up a soothing Apple Ginger Tea or a mellow, yet fragrant Fuwafuwa Milk Apple Tea. Both beverages are limited-edition items for autumn and incorporate local Shinshu apples. Limited-edition snacks such as cookies, cream-filled biscuits and doughnuts are also available, but only on weekends and public holidays.

With entrance made freely available to visitors, the Autumn Library is certainly worth checking out as part of a unique autumn-viewing experience.
