Discover the local flavours and culture of Miyagi Prefecture in Japan's sushi capital!
Shiogama City in Miyagi Prefecture is a beautiful port town centered around one of Japan's leading fishing harbours. Boasting the largest landing of fresh tuna in Japan and home to the most sushi restaurants per capita in the country, the city is a gastronomic mecca for lovers of delicious Japanese food and sake. The town is also home to three nationally famous sake breweries that provide the 'omiki' (sacred ceremonial sake offered to the gods) at Shiogama-jinja Shrine - the most important Shinto Shrine in northern Japan. This half-day tour will introduce visitors to the gourmet and cultural highlights of the town, starting with making your own seafood bowl at Nakaoroshi fish market. Other stops include sake tasting at local brewery 'Urakasumi', gelato made with locally produced seaweed-salt at Ota Miso & Soy-sauce factory, and a visit to Okama Shrine - a mysterious local shrine that houses ancient salt-cauldrons that predict natural disasters!
