Red spider lilies: heralds of autumn

You can enjoy expansive rural landscapes everywhere in Saga Prefecture, but the sight near the Eriyama settlement of 600 terraced rice-paddies interwoven with abundant nature at a 250-meter altitude is something unique even by Saga’s standards and has earned the area a nationwide reputation. Field mustard and cherry blossoms in spring, fireflies, insects and freshwater crabs in summer, and red spider lilies and cosmoses in autumn guarantee that whenever you visit there will be plenty to see and marvel at.

From late September to early October, the crimson red spider lilies fill the paths between the rice fields, creating a spectacular scene that attracts many camera lovers. The green of the rice plants contrasts with the red of the flowers, and if you view them from below with the blue of the sky above they create one of the most photogenic landscapes you can find.

The area is not very well serviced by public transportation, but in a way this makes a visit it even more worthwhile. However, every September there is a special shuttle bus that can take you there free of charge During the “Eriyama Higanbana Matsuri” (red spider lilies’ festival), which also includes a farmer’s market and a scarecrow festival.
