Shimanto River

~The Last Clear River In Japan~

The Shimanto River in western Kochi Prefecture is one of Japan’s three clear-flowing rivers. It’s a place where visitors can enjoy majestic natural scenery and a wide range of activities.

◆Low-water crossings over the Shimanto River

The Shimanto River is well-known for its many low-water crossings, and they are an integral part of the river’s scenic charm. A low-water crossing is a river that is underwater when the water flow is high. They are narrow and either have no parapets at all or very low parapets. Including those of its tributaries, the Shimanto River has 47 low-water crossings, but the longest one, the Sada Low-Water Crossing, is the closest to Shimanto City and popular with tourists.

◆Enjoy the spectacular scenery with a wide range of activities

If you’re visiting the Shimanto River for the first time, we recommend taking a sightseeing boat. The relaxing cruise will also let you see the low-water crossings up close. There are multiple operators with various departure and arrival points, so check their websites for details. With bicycles and canoes also available for hire, there are many ways to enjoy the river, so choose the one that suits you.
