teamLab Transforms an Acorn Forest Into an Interactive Art Space That Reacts to Motion and Touch

A Permanent Digital Art Installation Lighting Up Musashino Woods Park in Saitama Prefecture

Step into a magical acorn forest illuminated in a vivid array of colours at Tokorozawa City in Saitama Prefecture. Large shiny ovoids that reflect the canopy of trees fill the forest floor in Musashino Woods Park, which light up in colour-changing fluorescent hues when night falls.

This permanent interactive art installation called ’teamLab: Resonating Life in the Acorn Forest’ is created by teamLab, the renowned international art collective that has held exhibitions in cities worldwide. 

Enhancing the beauty of nature using digital technology, teamLab transforms the forest into an art space of light. Installed amongst the towering trees are many large ovoids, which react to the touch and movement of people.

In the daytime, the ovoids rebound when pushed by a person or blown by the wind, and emits a chime. The other ovoids around it respond and follow suit, creating a ripple effect of sound that resonates across the forest. This surreal experience becomes more magical after the sun sets. The forest comes alive with reverberating sound and light as the ovoids continuously change colours with touch or when they detect motion in the space around them.

Responding to the ovoids, the trees also light up, blinking and changing colours, creating an ethereal atmosphere that is in harmony with nature.

The wide spectrum of lights -- up to 57 different liquified light colours -- that can be produced by the installations is every photographer’s delight. If you prefer a more relaxing experience, take your time to saunter through the forest and bathe in the therapeutic colour and sound experience.
