Tsugaru Shamisen

Tsugaru shamisen has a distinct sound that is created when the strings are struck with a trapezoidal plectrum called bachi. Originated from the Tsugaru region in Aomori, it is gaining popularity among the Japanese and international fans!

The best way to experience a live performance of this traditional instrument is at local Japanese restaurant or bar (Izakaya).

How to get there: From Tokyo, take the Tohoku Shinkansen to JR Shin-Aomori Station then transfer to the JR Ou Line for JR Aomori Station. It is about 15 minutes’ walk from the station. It is at the intersection where Shinmachi-dori and Yanagimachi-dori merge and Aomori Honcho Green Hotel is on the side.
