Aso Grassland Conservation Center

Everything you need to know about protecting the Aso grassland ecosystem

The Aso Grassland Conservation Center educates visitors on the importance of the Aso grassland ecosystem and about conservation efforts. The center is divided into two areas: the Education Center and the Information Center.

The Education Center serves as a base for key environmental conservation activities in the region, such as volunteering for noyaki, which is a controlled burning of fields to facilitate healthy soil, promote grass growth and prevent land erosion.

Exhibits in the Education Center feature taxidermy animals that can be seen in the grasslands and topographical dioramas of the area. A video corner shows ten-minute videos on the four seasons of the Aso Grasslands. The Education Center has programs that you can join for a fee, such as craft workshops that use excess Japanese pampas grass to make brooms and owl decorations.

The Information Center serves as a hub for recommending sightseeing spots for visitors. Take advantage of the deck in the back of the center, from where you can see views of wide fields of grass, which are a vibrant green in summer.
