Mount Ogigahana Hiking Trail

Vistas of the Kuju mountain range, Kyushu azaleas, and seasonal foliage

This hike starts at Akagawa Onsen, a hot spring area reportedly discovered over 800 years ago. At the first junction after setting out from the Akagawa Trailhead, the trail splits and one path leads to Mount Kuju. Follow the path toward Mount Ogigahana (1,698 m). The path is lined with trees and Japanese andromeda shrubs.

The forest and shrubs will open up to grasslands that are home to evergreen bamboo and Japanese pampas grass. You will reach the gentle peak of Ogigahana after climbing a short slope. A carpet of Kyushu azaleas bloom here in June, growing on the summit and spreading out eastward. Enjoy views of Mount Waita (1,500 m), Mount Kuju (1,786m) and Mount Aso (1,592 m) to the far south.
